Sugar is sugar is sugar, right? Well there are some subtle differences. And yes all sugar, no matter where it comes from, will spike blood sugar and cause a chain of events inside the body that ends in newly stored fat. However, I have not seen maple syrup as a culprit for the development of fatty liver disease, whereas high fructose corn syrup plays a huge factor in the development of that disease. Maple syrup and honey may actually have some antioxidant potential and honey has been used in various medicinal ways for thousands of years. Processed foods of any kind are really best avoided and here is just one more example of why something that has been processed this much should not be consumed, namely sugar. Obviously any sweeteners should be minimized, but my tip for you today is to pick the ones that require the least amount of processing.
