How to choose high quality supplements.

Are the probiotics you’re taking living? Is the fish oil you take oxidized and supplementing you with heavy metals?
Which supplements to choose in a seemingly endless market of natural products is a very common question, especially now. And while I don’t endorse using supplements without the guidance of a healthcare practitioner, I know that most people are. So for those people, what are some things to watch out for on the label?
  1. Make sure it has a Natural Product Number (NPN), meaning it has been reviewed and approved by Health Canada. This ensures it has a product license which means labeling and packaging requirements are met, good manufacturing practices are followed, and safety and efficacy evidence is provided.
  2. Look for third party testing, which means an independent organization has come to verify that what the label says is accurate and there are no contaminants or adulterations included in the product. A couple examples of organizations that do this include ISO 17025, Isura, NSF, and consumer labs. (Note: this may not always be on the product label but you can usually find the info on the company’s website.)
  3. Types of ingredients being used and where and how they are sourced; in other words, there are some cheaper and quicker ways of manufacturing nutrients that may have the same name but are not utilized by the body as effectively as nutrients of higher quality. In addition, check under the “non-medicinal ingredients” lists for additives, artificial colours, sweeteners, and chemicals that you don’t want to be consuming every day.
  4. Of course dosage is important, especially if supplements are being used therapeutically and not just as a dietary appurtenance. Your health care provider will be able to help with this part.
  5. And as always, make sure to take a look at the cautions, contraindications, and interactions; a “natural” product does not by any means imply safety or inconsequential effects.
So those are a few ways to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to natural health products. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

It really helped when you elaborated on checking the ingredients of your supplement before you start taking it. A few months ago, my brother started lifting weights and training to run a marathon, and I think he'd benefit from taking quality supplements that'll boost his performance, so I'll suggest it when I see him. Thanks for the advice on being careful when buying supplements to avoid additives and artificial ingredients.

It's great that you elaborated that you should consider knowing if the supplement is approved by the National Health department to ensure safety. Yesterday, my cousin informed me she was planning to start her weight loss journey. She asked if I had thoughts on the best option to consider for choosing nutritional supplements. I appreciate this valuable article, I'll be sure to tell her that she can try quality supplements as they can help with her journey.
